“A Port of Views” is a site-specific art project for the Village of Greenport, NY. It will be sited in downtown Mitchell Park near the Camera Obscura, facing the Peconic Bay and Shelter Island to the south. The circular imagery and rotating structure echoes the Greenport Merry-go-Round and the walk-in Camera Obscura, two unique and celebrated attractions. An inspiration for the project, the Camera Obscura was an important predecessor to the development of photography. “A Port of Views” references this room-size optical device by engaging the viewer to look through photographic images of eyes. This temporary, Summer-long project will highlight the community of Greenport’s long history and serve as a focal point for the town’s embrace of the arts and as a cultural destination.
It is my hope that “A Port of Views” will foster a sense of community and inspiration among visitors and residents in the Village of Greenport. It evokes, quite literally, the power of vision and the timeless landscape as witnessed by the continuity of human presence.
